Chapter 12: Your Health and the Environment

As the general population begins to spend more and more time each year on the internet the probability of obtaining serious health problems and degrading the health of the environment is drastically increased. Mobile phones, video-game consoles, and computers all augment the chances of you contracting a detrimental health condition. According to news.menshealth.com, if you spend in excess of 10 hours per week on the computer you not only heighten your chances to contract many different health issues, but also you’ll start to lose connections with friends, family members, and neighbors. Some heath concerns that come with extensive use of the internet are Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS), static posture, eye and vision problems, stress and depression, internet addiction. While all of these illnesses may not be physical, the mental health related problems, such as internet addiction, are of serious concern as well. To prevent these things from happening, one should consider decreasing his weekly usage of the computer and if that is not an option consider being on the internet in intervals. This will allow your body to relax and recover. Although, ergonomics, or the study of designing and positioning work environment and computer equipment in a healthy manner, has the sole aim of reducing these risks you should still take caution. In addition, many places such as Guiyu, China, discard tons of digital electronic devices and components each year with disregard to serious health and environmental hazards.

Chapter 9: Geographic Information System

A geographic information system (GIS) is capable of storing, manipulating, and displaying geographic or special information, including maps of locations or regions around the world. This usage can prove to be very beneficial in many instances; such as, a 911 operator who needs to quickly determine the specific location of a caller with an emergency. In addition, a business may use a GIS to display sales information or product popularity in a particular region of the country. Also, another practical use is through the military whom may need to target a specific enemy. In conjunction with a global positioning system (GPS) this could be a very effective method of identifying enemy positions and equipment in a constantly changing battle situation. One of the most popular GIS's to date is Google Earth. This product, released in 2005, is a highly sophisticated program that superimposes images obtained from satellite imagery, aerial photography, and 3D globe. Some uses for it are directions, viewing areas subject to natural disasters, and explore locations on the Moon and Mars. It comes with many various features including a plane simulator, sky mode, street view, water and ocean, and historical imagery. This program is supported on all browsers, and there is a mobile app for the iPhone as well.

As the usage of internet-based commerce websites such as Amazon.com, eBay.com, and 
Craigslist.com became more popular, many people sought to these sites in refuge of many common and uncommon items that they may need in their daily life. Objects such as watches, cars, clothes, school supplies, and other various household items may be purchased from these websites at the simple click of a button. These websites have completely changed the international market in terms of how simply and effectively they can supply their clients with their products. However, in addition to the useful items sold on these websites there are also many less-practical that sellers wish to get rid of.
